I have been an attorney for over ten years, but law wasn’t my first career. After dropping out of high school and obtaining a GED, I worked as a certified EMT and paramedic for years. Every day was unique, with different problems to solve, and I got to help people who were in a crisis, often on the worst day of their lives. I found that career to be tough and stressful, but very rewarding. Interestingly, that job turned out to be a great preparation for a career in law.
After two injuries that ended my career as a paramedic, I decided to regroup and see what I could do to keep helping people. I was very fortunate to have several meaningful experiences during college and graduate school, which continued to shape who I am today. While in college I had the opportunity to study in Africa for several weeks. I then attended graduate school in Europe, and I met and learned from people from all over the world.
The academic programs taught me a lot, but just as valuable was getting to experience new environments and different perspectives. We may have different lives and backgrounds, but everyone deserves dignity, security, and respect.
I carried that knowledge into my legal career. I started out in criminal law, once again helping clients through potentially life-changing crises. I moved into civil defense for the opportunity to gain more courtroom experience and to expand my legal knowledge and skills. One of the most important things I learned from that work was how easily a lack of clarity can lead to conflict, and how carefully drafted documents can prevent it. As a litigator, I became a partner at two national law firms, including the Local Office Managing Partner at one of them.
While I enjoyed the challenge of trial work, I found that I really wanted to get back to my roots: helping people through difficult times, and when possible, helping them avoid a crisis in the first place. Everything I’ve experienced so far has brought me to Aspen Estate Planning so I could do just that. The most satisfying thing about my work here is knowing that my clients and their families are well-protected and prepared for whatever the future holds.
I enjoy getting to really know my clients and developing a relationship with them. I know dealing with estate and succession issues can be stressful; it’s important to me to put my clients at ease so the planning process feels like a relief, not added pressure. I want them to feel confident about the work we do together, and comfortable enough to call me at any time with questions.
When I’m not collaborating with my clients, you may be able to find me doing pro bono work, spending time with my wife and our two rescue pugs, or curating my extensive bow tie collection.
