People have asked me why I named my firm “Aspen Estate Planning,” why not some version of “Zotti Law Firm.” I named it Aspen Estate Planning because my firm is not about me. It’s about my clients, and I wanted a firm name that conveyed this.
I went through dozens of potential names. Some good, some not. My husband can attest to this fact. But nothing felt quite right. I wanted something that would hold meaning for me and my clients – something that would illustrate the importance of estate planning to everyone.
Then, one day I was looking through some photos from a recent trip my husband, Nick, and I took to Colorado.
Nick and I love the mountains. Some people are beach people, and some are mountain people. Nick and I are definitely mountain people, and every chance we get, we love to go hiking in the mountains. We particularly love the Rocky Mountains and the Cascades. The air always seems fresher in the mountains, and somehow, life’s stresses seem to fall away on a mountain trail.
As I was looking at our pictures, I saw all the photos I’d taken of beautiful aspen groves, and I started thinking about how unique these beautiful trees are in nature. Genetically, all the aspens in a grove are one tree and share a common root system. It’s their common root system that helps aspen trees thrive and gives them the ability to be resilient even in the face of winter storms, drought, and fire. When a single tree dies, the root system continues to live and sprout new trees. In fact, scientists recently discovered that aspen trees are not only resistant to fire, but also act as a natural fire block, slowing the spread of wildfires. That’s when it hit me like a lightning bolt, a great estate plan is like an aspen grove.
A common root system helps the grove thrive and be resilient, and the trees themselves are a bulwark against fire. A well-designed estate plan works the same way. It protects you while you’re alive, and it protects your loved ones after you’re gone. No matter the size of your family, whether the one you’re born into or the one you’ve made, everyone deserves that strong foundation for their future.
So, that’s what inspired my firm name and that’s why I’m proud to say that I’m the founder of Aspen Estate Planning.
